In the first edition, the tempo was indicated in 4/4, but many recent editions follow the manuscript, which indicates "Cut Time" (notated by a C with a vertical line on it), also accepted as corresponding to 2/2. It's a series of rising and falling Arpeggios in different chord progressions, starting with C minor.
