BEETHOVEN'S UNIVERSE - The Architects of Music

Beethoven's Universe - Symphony No. 5 in C minor
1st Movement I Part 1-1

The mighty Fifth Symphony and its iconic 4-note motif

The Architects of Music I  Narration by Lawrence Rapchak

  • The 4-note motif expands!
  • The central development section, sometimes mysterious, sometimes tempestuous, leads to the recapitulation and the dynamic, fateful coda.

In this first of 3 sections on the 1st movement, the famous opening bars of this monumental symphony are discussed. Next, we show that Beethoven used a similar theme in other compositions. A composition by Luigi Cherubini is also referenced, and it almost certainly influenced this opening theme. And we conclude with a deeper dive into how Beethoven developed this simple theme as the symphony begins to unfold.
