Amnon WEINSTEIN - In Memoriam
Master Violin Maker Amnon Weinstein
Amnon Weinstein is the protagonist of a few documentary films: Le Voyage d' Amnon (Bluepress), Violins in War Time, and a documentary about Bronislav Hubermann and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra: Orchestra in Exile.
A Life Dedicated to Music
Where to start when talking about Amnon? This remarkable, charismatic, and passionate luthier has shaped an incredible and prosperous life for himself, his family, and the people around him.
Weinstein, a viola and trumpet player, first learned his violin-making craft in childhood with his father. He studied in Cremona, Italy, for three years with the most-known teachers of that era, such as Pietro Sgarabotto, Giuseppe Ornati, and Ferdinando Garimberti. He also studied in Paris with the legendary Etienne Vatelot.
He won a gold medal and a certificate of excellence for violin sound at Salt Lake City in 1982 and was awarded the prestigious Ole Bull prize in Bergen, Norway, in 2007.
Amnon received the Medal of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, signed by the president and handed to him by Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in a ceremony held in the Jewish Museum in Berlin on Dec. 14th, 2016.

Amnon's legacy - Violins of Hope
"Remember me, remember us."
Amnon and his son Avshalom Weinstein own the "Violins of Hope" collection. They dedicated their expertise and endless love to ensure that those instruments, most of which were cheap and unsophisticated, get a new, beautiful makeover. Not enough, they also have a fantastic sound worth of the best musicians and large music halls.
All instruments have a common denominator: they are symbols of hope and a way to say: remember me, remember us.
The Violins of Hope
Amnon initiated "Violins of Hope," a project dedicated to collecting and reconstructing violins owned by Jews who survived World War II. Many of the instruments belonged to Jews before and during the war and were donated by or bought from survivors; some arrived through family members, and many carried Stars of David as decorations.
Violins of Hope collection now consists of over 60 instruments, each with a story and history. The instruments were used in concerts held in Jerusalem, Istanbul, Paris, London, Sion (Switzerland), Maastricht (Netherlands), Charlotte, North Carolina, and Cleveland, US, where they were exhibited and played in synagogues, churches, universities, and symphony concert halls.
The sound of violins is often compared to the beauty of the human voice. When played with talent and spirit, violins are known to reach out and touch hearts. This was the role of violins in the war—to touch hearts, kindle hope for better times, and spread it around. Wherever there was music, there was hope.
The Violins of Hope present the victory of the human spirit over evil and hatred. As many as 6,000,000 Jews were murdered in WW2, but their memory is not forgotten. It comes back to life with every concert, act of love, and celebration of the human spirit.
Amnon received the Ernst-Cramer-Medal for the Violins of Hope project, which the Israel-German association (Deutsch-Israelische Gesellschaft e.V.) awarded him.
