Chapter 11 Body Awareness to Prepare for Virtuosic 20th-Century Works
Feldenkrais Method – Prokofiev: Toccata in D minor, Op. 11 (Instructor: Uri Vardi).
This unique session focuses on body awareness and efficient technique by applying the Feldenkrais Method to Prokofiev’s percussive toccata.
Prof. Vardi uses the complex piece as a case study in minimizing tension: “When we play difficult pieces…it’s like calling an army of muscles into battle. Feldenkrais is the opposite: relax every muscle to save energy for the ones that need strength.”
The student learns practical strategies to release unnecessary tension, improve posture, and use skeletal alignment for power. Incorporating this awareness dramatically boosts technical ease and prevents injury, preparing the pianist to tackle virtuosic 20th-century works with greater freedom.

It's a difficult piece. And when we play difficult pieces, it's like we call each of our muscles to face a challenge, like we call our "army" to the battlefield. The Feldenkrais method is based on the opposite: relax every muscle in order to save energy for the muscles that require strength.
