Chapter 10 Produce Sparkling Arpeggios, Tremolos, and Lush Pedalling

Franz Liszt – Les jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este (Instructor: Peter Frankl).
In stark contrast to Chapter 9, this late Liszt piece offers a lesson in delicate tonal coloring and Impressionistic sound.
Composed in 1877, “the piece looks forward to the Impressionism of Debussy… and is a remarkable example of Liszt’s use of coloristic effects.” Prof. Frankl shows how to create shimmering, “water”-like textures with fine voicing and soft technique.
The student learns to produce sparkling arpeggios, tremolos, and lush pedaling to evoke fountains and light.
Mastering this poetic tone-painting hones the pianist’s touch and pedal control, adding a new palette of transparent sound to their playing.

A fantastic piece, one of the several portraits that Liszt wrote after being inspired by his traveling experiences to Italy, and to Rome in particular.
