Chapter 6 Texture, Tone Color, and Emotional Expression

Robert Schumann – Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13 (Instructor: Sander Sittig).
This masterclass tackles Schumann’s set of etude-variations, immersing the student in Romantic imagination and technical variety.
Prof. Sittig shows how this “set of variations” methodically explores a wealth of piano techniques and timbral colors. The student learns to handle each variation’s unique challenges – from lyrical rubato to tempestuous runs – while maintaining the underlying theme.
It’s an excellent study in texture, tone color, and emotional expression, training the pianist to balance virtuosity and poetry in a large-form Romantic work.

Preview R. Schumann – Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13

Chopin was one of the few composers who considered the Etude as a real composition, not only a piece to develop concepts and technique, so he wrote his 24 etudes also to have the player enjoy the piece itself. And our teacher goes very deep into some topics and focuses on how to achieve the best out of it, with special topics about the use of the pedal, overlapping fingering, and building of melody and Legato.
