Chapter 5 Develop Cantabile Tone, Controlled Voicing, and Expressive Phrasing

Frédéric Chopin – Etude in E major, Op. 10 No. 3 “Tristesse” (Instructor: Ricardo Castro).
In this iconic Romantic étude, Chopin marries technical study with beautiful melody. Prof. Castro dives deeply into legato touch and overlapping fingering to achieve Chopin’s singing tone.
The lesson shows how to “build the melody and legato” line, refining pedaling for coloration. By treating the etude as both music and technique, the student develops a singing cantabile tone, controlled voicing, and expressive phrasing – vital skills for all romantic repertoire.

Preview F. Chopin – Etude in E major, Op. 10 No. 3 “Tristesse”

Chopin was one of the few composers who considered the Etude as a real composition, not only a piece to develop concepts and technique, so he wrote his 24 etudes also to have the player enjoy the piece itself. And our teacher goes very deep into some topics and focuses on how to achieve the best out of it, with special topics about the use of the pedal, overlapping fingering, and building of melody and Legato.
